Eight Forms Of Lakshmi and Wealth
What is wealth, what does it truly means to us, what does it represent for us? Each of us should contemplate, meditate on this essential question. The answer could differ for each individual on this planet; when we say wealth, in most people's minds a picture of material comfort, luxuries and conveniences is formed as an association, providing the grandiose illusion, in accordance with Kali Yuga cycle we live in.
Ancient Vedic texts dissolve the darkness of this materialistic bondage, reminding us that what true wealth represents - indefinitely more than a concrete, tangible objects, made for indulgence of the senses. Wealth, in shortly, should encompass health, success, courage, friendliness, skills and talents, dignity, and the memory of one’s Divine nature standing on the top.
Many of us are incredibly wealthy without even realizing it or being aware of it, sometimes for an entire lifetime, which indicates a certain karma with wealth related matters. What is the point of wealth and all of the blessings if we are not aware of them? We have been conditioned to measure wealth in terms of bank accounts and investments, physical resources and assets, rather than much broader, spiritual perspective. Traditional Vedic literature describes secondary manifestations of wealth as the Ashta Lakshmi, or the eight powers of Lakshmi.
Studying traditional depictions of Lakshmi, this interpretation offers a forgotten perception and knowledge, which is much needed in the era when the human consciousness is on the lowest point, in ever changing-cycles; a knowledge within each of us, waiting to be revived.
Dhana Lakshmi – Wealth as Material Comfort
Depicted as six-armed, in red garments, carrying a discus, a conch, Amrita kumbha (a pitcher containing the elixir of life), a bow, an arrow, and a lotus, with gold coins falling from her hands.
The first type of wealth is physical money and property. Many people inherit wealth but struggle with unhappiness or failure in life. Some experience family conflicts over inherited money, feeling undeserving and mismanaging their fortune. Others may be financially rich but suffer from poor health, making their wealth meaningless.
Astrologically, wealth yogas are abundant, but strong 2nd and 8th houses fortified by benefic planets in their own signs, exalted, or in friendly signs indicate substantial wealth.
Dhanya Lakshmi – Wealth as Health
Depicted with eight arms in green garments, holding two lotuses, a paddy crop, sugarcane, bananas, and showing abhaya and varada mudras.
Often associated with agriculture, this wealth represents food and well-being. Many people spend years acquiring financial wealth only to use it in regaining lost health. Some are financially stable but suffer from dietary restrictions or sleep disorders, unable to enjoy their affluence.
Farmers embody this form of wealth, as they remain connected to the land, livestock, and crops, ensuring sustenance even in economic downturns.
In Vedic astrology, Taurus, the 2nd natural sign of the zodiac, embodies these qualities. A strong 2nd house, Venus in its own or friendly sign, a well-placed Moon, and a strong Saturn linked to agriculture enhance these attributes.
Vijaya Lakshmi – Wealth as Success
Depicted with eight arms in red garments, carrying a chakra, sword, shield, lotus, and pasha, with hands in abhaya and varada mudras.
Success is a crucial form of wealth. Many wealthy families have children who, despite financial backing, struggle with success. Lacking Vijaya Lakshmi, people develop negative attitudes, fearing failure and avoiding risks. In contrast, those who embrace challenges and persistently overcome obstacles exhibit this wealth.
Astrologically speaking - a strong 9th and 10th house, along with raj yogas between them, support success. A well-placed 11th house lord and a strong 11th house also contribute.
Veera Lakshmi – Wealth as Courage
Depicted with eight arms in red garments, carrying a chakra, shankh, bow, arrow, palm leaf scriptures, and in a symbolic mudra.
Courage is an essential aspect of wealth. Financial riches mean little if one lacks the bravery to take risks and enjoy life. Some fear mistakes so much that they remain stagnant, while others embrace adventure, viewing life as an exciting journey.
A strong Venus enhances enjoyment, while a well-aspected Mars in Aries or exalted in Capricorn connected to Venus fosters courage. A robust 3rd house and its well-placed lord, along with a strong D-3 chart, reinforce this wealth.
Aadi Lakshmi – Wealth as Friendliness
Aadi Lakshmi, or Maha Lakshmi, is depicted as the consort of Narayana, symbolizing universal service.
True wealth includes the ability to connect with others and foster a sense of belonging. Some individuals have inherited wealth yet feel isolated and unable to integrate into society. In contrast, others, regardless of financial status, thrive in social settings and dedicate themselves to charitable causes.
A strong Venus or Jupiter in the 1st or 7th house, well-placed and in a friendly sign, enhances these qualities.
Gaja Lakshmi – Wealth as Dignity and Good Fortune
Depicted in red garments, carrying two lotuses, with hands in abhaya and varada mudras, and elephants bathing her with pots.
This form represents good luck, abundance, and dignity. Some individuals exude royalty and radiate prosperity through their very presence. Such individuals often engage in philanthropy and carry themselves with a natural grace.
Astrologically - a benefic Sun in the Lagna, especially if connected to Jupiter, or an exalted, well-placed Sun enhances this wealth. Venus or Jupiter in or aspecting the 1st house further strengthens this quality.
Vidya Lakshmi – Wealth as Knowledge and Divine Memory
Depicted in white garments, with four arms, carrying two lotuses, and in traditional mudras.
The greatest wealth is the memory of our Divine Source. Some individuals equate wealth with books and wisdom, valuing knowledge over financial assets. True knowledge leads one back to the Divine.
A strong 5th and 9th house, well-placed lords, and a robust 12th house with its exalted or own-sign lord support this wealth. Strong placements in the D-20 chart and Ketu in Pisces or Scorpio are also favorable.
Santhana Lakshmi – Wealth as Progeny and Legacy
Depicted with six arms, carrying two kalashas, a sword, a shield, and a child holding a lotus.
Children and the continuation of one's lineage are considered profound wealth. However, modern times witness strained parent-child relationships, challenging this traditional view. The greatest obstacle to spiritual enlightenment is attachment to children, particularly when they stray from familial expectations.
A strong 5th and 9th house, well-placed lords, benefics in the 5th house, and a strong D-7 chart support this form of wealth.
In conclusion, we could most definitely state that true wealth encompasses far more than material assets, which is, quite contrary to what most of the modern "gurus" and "teachers" would portray - the lowest form of wealth, yet, still is needed in this dense, material world. The eight forms of Lakshmi remind us that abundance manifests in various aspects of life, each contributing to a truly fulfilling existence - to an overall, incomprehensively complex odysseey of the soul, of the "individual" consciousness, standing as a witness on all levels - forever evolving, aiming to be free again.
