Lunar & Solar Eclipse

Astronomical perspective:

Eclipses, a captivating phenomenon of the Cosmos, epitomizing the hypnotic dance of cosmic bodies as one partially or entirely obscures another. Rooted in ancient Greek, the term "eclipse" derives from "ékleipsis," meaning to falter or yield, underscoring the profound nature of these celestial occurrences. Solar eclipses, exclusive to New Moons when the Moon interposes itself between Earth and the Sun, engender a straight alignment of the trio, resulting in remarkable display. A total solar eclipse, witnessed from Earth as the Moon entirely veils the Sun, casts a somber veil over the landscape akin to twilight's embrace. Contrastingly, a partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon partially obscures the Sun's disk, offering a captivating play of light and shadow. An annular solar eclipse, conversely, unfolds a mesmerizing "ring of fire" as the New Moon covers the Sun's center, leaving its outer edges aglow. Rare and intriguing, the hybrid solar eclipse transitions between annular and total phases along its celestial path, showcasing the dynamic interplay of cosmic forces.

Myths & Legends:

Across cultures and epochs, humanity has woven myths and legends to explain these enigmatic spectacles. In Hindu mythology, the powerful demon Svarabhanu quest for immortality culminates in a cunning deception; appearing disguised as one of the deities during the distribution of Amrita (immortality nectar) by Goddess Mohini, Svarabhanu took some Amrita by sitting in between Sun and Moon. Sun and Moon exposed Svarabhanu as demon and informed Lord Vishnu (Goddess Mohini) and instantly Lord Vishnu cut the head of Svarabhanu with cosmic Sudarshan Chakra. However, a few drops of Amrita have gone into his mouth, hence two parts acquired immortality. The head is called Rahu and the tail or the body Ketu. Simhika nurtured the head of the Swarbhanu and got a snake body. The severed body of Swarbhanu was nurtured by a Brahmin named Mini. Lord Vishnu granted a serpent head to the severed body of Swarbhanu and granted a boon that he will travel above Sun. Due to this Rahu and Ketu always treat Sun and Moon as their natural enemies and causes eclipses to Moon and Sun. Rahu makes Moon to Wax and Wane on daily basis and causes lunar eclipse. Ketu set to travel on the higher circute of Sun and causes solar eclipse.

Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets without any physical existence. They acquire qualities of the planets associated with them. Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars. In Astronomy these are two mathematical computed sensitive points on ecliptic. In Astrology the ancient sages gave these sensitive points, graha status. Ketu in 12th house become karaka for Moksha (Salvation). Rahu in lagna gives mundane comforts.

Swarbhanu manifesting as the temporary swallowing of the Sun is one of the legendary ancient stories. Among the Inca of South America, solar eclipses symbolized the wrath of Inti, the benevolent Sun God, casting shadows upon the Earth as cosmic admonitions. In Tahitian lore, the Sun and Moon become star-crossed lovers, entwined in a celestial embrace during eclipses, while Vietnamese tradition attributes these phenomena to a colossal frog's voracious appetite for solar splendor.
